About Boxhill Farm

About Boxhill Farm

The farm, situated in the Snoqualmie River valley, began its life early in the twentieth century as a dairy, with the big barn being completed around 1924. And, like all farms, it has many layers of history that have piled up over the years as successive generations worked and improved the land.

We are currently working towards using the farm as a large, shared habitat for wildlife, plants, the nursery, and for us.

Boxhill Farm

As we go on exploring this space, experimenting with the edges of human privacy and nature, and the personalities of various plant forms, we find that we have a nursery with an intellectual component that others may be lacking in. Since gardens take considerable effort and resources to establish, we believe in incorporating plants that give back in structure, color, self-sufficiency and product (like cut flowers, berries, or nectar for hummingbirds). Gardens should be fun and fluid, a continuous delight, something to rearrange once in awhile--and we're rearranging to our heart's content.

The nursery, begun in 1998, has a few special interest categories resulting from the owners' passions, such as an extensive collection of bamboo, over sixty cultivars of daylilies, and twenty-seven varieties of boxwood.

Every spring about two hundred perennials, selected from the best hybrids available, are offered. Research includes everything from trips to the Chelsea Flower Show in London, to scouring the Encyclopedia Botanica and talking to local growers. This selection is what makes Boxhill quirky and fun--visitors should see things they never do, growing in large plantings, in different seasons, and have confidence that a supporting cast of plants can be found here as well.
